Origin and history

The building of the former chamber of commerce and industry of Beaune, located 6 rue Vergnette-de-la-Motte, was acquired in 1889 to house this institution created in 1864 by imperial decree. This building, formerly dependent on the Carmelite convent, was renovated under the direction of Arthur Montoy and architect Felix Goin. The works, completed around 1891, included neo-Gothic woodwork, an exhibition room for Burgundy wines, and a total decor (soils, ceilings, stained glass windows) reflecting the artistic spirit of the period. The Chamber of Commerce held an annual exhibition on local wines from 1892 to 1938, while playing a key role in their promotion to the universal exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1894.

Arthur Montoy, secretary-treasurer and then president of the ICC for 26 years, marked the place by his technical innovations (filtering, sterilization of wines) and his attention to architectural detail, attested by his drawings of execution. The building, classified as a historical monument in 2023, preserves panelling serving as bottle displays and a map in relief of the wine climates of the Côte. Its hall hosted public demonstrations until the Second World War, while the ICC extended its premises in the former convent from 1978, before its merger in 2009 with Dijon.

The creation of the CCI de Beaune in 1864 met a request from the wine trade association founded in 1857, dominated by major wine traders. His activity, centered on the valorisation of Burgundy wines, ceased in 2009 after 145 years of existence, with the transfer of his archives to the Municipal Archives of Beaune. The building, a public property, today bears witness to the age of the Beaunois wine trade and the influence of the neo-Gothic in the local heritage, particularly through its links with the restoration of the hotel-God by Maurice Ouradou.

The protected elements include the entire building, classified by decree of 30 August 2023, with its interior decorations and monumental staircase. The Beaunoise companies, responsible for carrying out the work under Montoy's supervision, helped to forge a unique architectural identity, combining commercial functionality and historical aesthetics. This place thus symbolizes the alliance between wine heritage, technical innovation and artistic heritage in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
