Origin and history

The Château de la Boube is a Louis XIII building built in the first half of the 17th century. Located in Chevagnes, in the department of Allier (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), it is part of an architectural complex organised around a courtyard closed by two communal buildings. The house body is located at the bottom of this courtyard, accessible by a remarkable entrance gate, the only element classified as Historic Monument by decree of 21 March 1988.

The entrance gate, baroque style, is the most notable element of the castle. It consists of a frame with crossettes, topped by an arc in basket handle. Two small pilasters support an entanglement adorned with a bare frieze and a moulted cornice, prolonged by symmetrical volutes evoking an ionic capital. In the centre, a rectangular niche houses a statue of Saint-Blaise, framed by stretched consoles and surmounted by a curvilinear pediment. Two symmetrical pots complete this decorative ensemble, typical of the mid-17th century.

Although the entire castle has lost some of its original character over the centuries, the portal retains a major architectural interest. It illustrates a rare baroque influence in the region, while reflecting the aesthetic codes of the Louis XIII period. Other parts of the castle, such as the commons and the house, do not enjoy specific protection, but contribute to the general harmony of the building.
