Origin and history
The Montgérain Calvary is a monumental cross erected in the 4th quarter of the 13th century, located in the heart of the village, opposite the town hall. Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 13 October 1892, it is distinguished by its imposing architecture: a cross resting on a cone and a cylindrical barrel composed of semicircular drums masonated, all placed on an octagonal base with four steps. His monumentality brings him closer to other regional ordeals, such as the Cross of Menevillers.
Located in the department of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, this calvary embodies a medieval religious heritage typical of the Picardy villages. Its central location, on the public square, suggests a role both spiritual and community, marking the village space as a place of gathering and devotion. The protection of historic monuments underscores its heritage and architectural value.
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its classification and communal property. Although little documented about its sponsors or its precise construction context, the Calvary illustrates 13th century Christian art in Picardia, a period marked by the rise of monumental crosses as symbols of faith and local power. Its state of conservation and its exact location (1 Place de la Mairie) are attested by modern surveys, with a map accuracy deemed satisfactory (note 7/10).
