Origin and history
The thermal complex of Martigny-les-Bains has its origins under the Second Empire, when the station was created. Its development was especially pronounced between 1880 and the 1930s, when it reached its peak. The Pavillon des Sources, built around 1882, illustrates this expansion with its glazed metal architecture and decorative ironwork. It is extended to the west by a shopping gallery, forming a coherent architectural ensemble.
The station suffered damage during the conflicts of the twentieth century, partially affecting its heritage. In spite of this, some elements were preserved and protected: the park's three kiosks were listed in the Historic Monuments in 1987, while the Sources Pavilion and the former adjacent shopping mall were classified in 1996. These protections reflect the historic and architectural value of the site.
Today, the thermal complex remains a significant vestige of the golden age of spas in France. Its location in Martigny-les-Bains, in the department of Vosges, makes it a major local heritage, linked to the history of the seaside and social practices of the 19th and early 20th century.
