Origin and history

Goudemail Castle is a plan building in H, built around 1880 by Charles de Lorgeril in the municipality of Lanrodec, in the Côtes-d'Armor. Composed of a central body and two perpendicular wings, it stands out for its brick elevation, stone frames and slate roofs. Inside, a monumental Louis XIV-style fireplace, re-used in a living room, bears witness to an older architectural heritage. The outbuildings, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, complete this homogeneous ensemble.

The present castle replaced an old building, demolished around 1907, which served as a hunting lodge and summer residence. Attributed to the architect Claude Parent (although not confirmed), it is inspired by the Louis XIII style and is accompanied by a French-style garden of the 20th century, inspired by that of the Château de la Bourbansais. Its atypical architecture, contrasting with the surrounding rural landscape, makes it a representative example of 19th century castles in Brittany.

Listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage, the château de Goudemail is protected for its architectural quality and authenticity. Its landscaped park and commons in U, with pavilions at the ends, reinforce its monumental character. Although away from local traditions, it illustrates the influence of Parisian architects in the region and the evolution of aristocratic residences at that time.
