Origin and history
The church of Sainte-Catherine de Guchen, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its bell tower covered with an imperial roof, pierced with bays in the middle of the hangar decorated with balusters. On the other hand, three-sided abside preserves Romanesque berries that are now hidden. The entrance, located at the base of the bell tower, has a full-cindered door framed with flat pilasters and surmounted by a pediment decorated with a niche edicle. These architectural elements reflect a phased construction between the 14th and 17th centuries, mixing Romanesque and Gothic influences.
Inside, the nave communicates with the lower side by arches in the middle of the hanger resting on polygonal pillars. A narthex, surmounted by a stand, is arranged under the bell tower. The choir houses discovered murals representing the sacrifice of Abraham and Christ in Gethsemane, dated from the late 15th or early 16th century. These frescoes, framed by painted architecture, illustrate the artistic importance of the building. The master altar and the carved wooden side retables, located in the choir and chapels, complete this remarkable furniture heritage.
The church, including its murals, was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 6 March 1989. Owned by the commune of Guchen (Hautes-Pyrénées), it embodies a major religious and artistic heritage in Occitanie. Its location, although specified by an address (43 Route de la Vallée d.
