Origin and history
Aumont Hotel is a mansion built in the 1760s, located at 6 rue des Devins in Josselin, Morbihan. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the second half of the 18th century, with a "L"-shaped plan and an elevation on three levels. Its interior decor, particularly neat, includes scalloped panelling, carved wooden chimneys, and Chinese silk paintings, reflecting the refinement of the time.
The hotel was built by Martin d'Aumont, director of Rohan's family, in 1763. After its construction, the property passes into the hands of the Francheville family. The building largely retains its original interior distribution, with the exception of the second floor. The decorative elements, such as the muffled canvases depicting rural scenes on the ground floor or the seven silk paintings on the first floor, highlight the influence of cultural exchanges with Asia at this time.
Listed as historical monuments by order of 4 June 2007, the Hôtel d'Aumont is protected in its entirety, including its interior decorations. This ranking highlights its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for the artistic testimonies it houses. The precise location of the hotel, in the heart of Josselin, makes it a landmark of the Breton heritage of the end of the Ancien Régime.
