Origin and history

The Fountain boulevard du Nord de Carpentras was initially composed of a polygonal basin and a fungus-shaped central element. The latter was divided into a flared hemispherical basin and a conical godronate lid, topped by a vase resting on four volutes. Four mascarons representing lion muffles allowed water to spring, adding a decorative and functional dimension to the whole. Originally, this fountain was located in the town hall square, as evidenced by a document dated 1925, where it appears in the background of the door of Orange, another emblematic monument of the city.

Classified as a historical monument, this fountain was inscribed by arrest on 28 October 1949. It belonged to the commune of Carpentras, in the department of Vaucluse, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur. Although its exact location has evolved (it is now referenced boulevard du Nord), its architectural style and decorative elements reflect the artistic and urban practices of its time. The available GPS coordinates suggest an average accuracy of its current location, with an approximate address on Notre-Dame de Santé Avenue.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its heritage importance. The fountain illustrates the integration of art and public utility into the urban space, typical of the water developments of Provencal cities. Its relocation and preservation testify to the attention paid to this type of heritage, often linked to local history and the water needs of past populations.
