Origin and history
The castle of Touteville, located in Asnières-sur-Oise in Val-d'Oise, finds its origins in the 13th century, as evidenced by its cellars and foundations still visible today. Although the present castle dates mainly from the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, these medieval remains, including an immense underground room in excellent condition, recall its ancient past. Formerly called Castle d'Estouville (perhaps linked to the term estoc), it was the center of a fief dependent on the abbey of Royaumont as early as the mid-16th century. His first certified lords, M. de la Porte and M. Binot, marked this period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
In the 18th century, the castle underwent significant improvements, especially in its park, transformed into an English garden with water parts. The Countess of Kerkado (family of Saulx-Tavannes) played a key role, while at the Revolution the Lord was Gabriel Choart, president of the Aid Court. The estate, now shared between private property and municipal park (80% of its area), retains protected elements: the castle and its wing in return were registered on 27 September 1990, and the medieval cellar classified on 31 March 1992. Only the west walls and fragments of the north and south facades are visible from the public space.
Inside the castle houses a remarkable staircase and painted decorations, contrasting with the sobriety of its facades. The park, on horseback on Asnières-sur-Oise and Viarmes, is labeled a remarkable Garden for its landscape heritage. Although the castle remains a private residence, its history reflects the architectural and social evolutions of the Île-de-France, from medieval lords to aristocratic lighting.
