Origin and history
The Croix de Sainte-Anne, located in Saint-Pardoux-le-Lac in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a 17th-century religious monument. It is characterized by a symmetrical structure with four equal branches, with trilobed ends and apex. The barrel, octagonal in its upper part, expands into a square base, reflecting architectural know-how unique to the period. This type of cross, often erected at crossroads or near places of worship, served as a spiritual landmark and as a symbol of protection for rural communities.
To the west of the cross, a monumental altar composes a rectangle parallelepiped topped by a profiled tailloir, combining geometric simplicity and discreet ornaments. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments since 1985, illustrates the importance of the road crosses in the religious landscape of the Limousin in the 17th century. These buildings marked processes, parish boundaries or commemorated local events, while embodying collective piety in a region then marked by an agrarian economy and strong Catholic impregnation.
The exact location of the Croix de Sainte-Anne, near the rural road of Sainte-Anne, highlights its anchoring in the communal territory. Although the archives do not mention sponsors or artisans, its style suggests a realization by local stone tailors, trained in regional techniques. The protection of the monument in 1985 bears witness to its heritage value, preserving a remarkable example of the rural sacred art of New Aquitaine.
