Public laundry in the Tourne district: inscription by order of 20 September 1946
Origin and history
The Lair de la Tourne, located in Bourg-Saint-Andéol in the department of Ardèche, is a public building built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. This type of monument, typical of the French villages of this period, was mainly used to wash linen and was an essential meeting place for the inhabitants, especially for women. Its architecture reflects the practical and social needs of the time, where access to running water was centralized for reasons of hygiene and conviviality.
The Lair de la Tourne was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 20 September 1946, which is evidence of its heritage importance. Property of the commune of Bourg-Saint-Andéol, it is located in the district of La Tourne, on Avenue de Tourne. This type of public washing illustrates the collective organization of domestic tasks in 19th century rural societies, where common infrastructure played a key role in everyday life.
The location of the monument, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources, with an accuracy considered satisfactory.
