Origin and history

Saint-Gorgon-Saint-Dorothée Church is a Catholic church located in Veron, Yonne department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Sens and to the parish of Sainte-Alpais of Senonais and Jovinien. Dedicated to St Gorgon and St Dorothy, two martyr soldiers of the Roman legions under Emperor Probus, it preserves their memory through statues and an 18th century altarpiece.

Built in 1606, the church features a 1749 gate topped by a square tower of the same period. Its architecture is characterized by a unique nave covered with a wooden cradle and a vaulted choir on warheads. The high altar, dated the eighteenth century, is decorated with an ionic altarpiece and a painting depicting the two saints in armor, crowned by an angel. Among the remarkable elements are a 15th century swimming pool and 17th century equestrian statues, classified as historical monuments in 1984.

The furniture also includes armored baptismal fonts, golden brass shawls sheltering the relics of Saint Gorgon, and a 19th-century statuary dedicated to various saints, including Saint Vincent, patron saint of the winemakers. These elements reflect the religious and cultural importance of the building throughout the centuries, while demonstrating its role in local community life.

The Sunday Mass is celebrated episodicly, highlighting its current status as an active place of worship while preserving its historical heritage. The church thus illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolution of a rural religious building, marked by successive additions and dedications.
