Origin and history

The Basilica of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais of Avranches, erected between 1843 and 1899, replaces a 17th-century church deemed to be old. Its reconstruction, initiated by the architect Cheftel and financed in part by a parishioner, Mademoiselle de la Champagne, spread over several decades. The building adopted a sober neo-Renaissance style, marked by a latin cross nave and a 74-metre bell tower completed in 1898.

The church preserves an exceptional treasure, including the skull of Saint Aubert (VIII century), founder of Mont-Saint-Michel, and relics such as those of Saint Suzanne of Rome (XIII century). This heritage, saved after the collapse of St Andrew's Cathedral in 1794 and the revolutionary dispersion, is preserved thanks to the archpriest Prosper Cornille (1864–1933), who created a parish museum between 1913 and 1933.

The carillon of 32 bells, installed between 1899 and 1982, is one of the most remarkable in France. The bells, cast by the foundries Bollée (Le Mans) and Cornille-Havard (Villedieu-les-Poêles), are operated by a mechanism designed by Lucien Gourdin, a watchmaker engineer. The system, modernized in 2008, allows automatic and manual ringing, animating local life.

Ranked a historic monument in 2006, the basilica underwent major restoration in 2010–2011. Its interior, characterized by a Tuscan colonnade and a marble slab, contrasts with external austerity. The treasure, now managed by the Department of Antiquities and Art of the Channel, attracts visitors for its relics and its history linked to the founding of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The building illustrates the challenges of post-revolutionary religious reconstruction, between budgetary constraints and architectural ambitions. The Ministry's repeated refusal to finance the tower (1886–92) reflected tensions between the public authorities and parishes. Despite the fact that the basilica remains a symbol of Norman heritage, mixing medieval history and 19th century heritage.
