Origin and history

The Saint-Andéol church of Bourg-Saint-Andéol, located in the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a religious building whose current construction dates mainly to the 12th and 13th centuries. However, it retains traces of an earlier Carolingian building, attesting to an earlier religious occupation of the site. The church was consecrated on 28 February 1119 by Pope Calixte II, after having been entrusted in 1108 to the canons of Saint Ruf, a community of six religious. This place of worship is placed under the patronage of Andeol, a evangelizer of the region of Viviers, disciple of Polycarp of Smyrna and companion of Saint Bénigne.

Around 1200, a cloister was raised for the canons, bordering the church. The monument suffered major damage in 1598, when it was sacked by the Baron des Adrets during religious unrest. The order of Saint Ruf, the church's head, gradually declined in the 18th century until its dissolution in 1772. A restoration campaign undertaken in 1875 visa to restore the building's original Romanesque appearance, partially erasing the traces of subsequent changes.

In the 20th century, the church was enriched with contemporary stained glass, the result of a public commission by artist Jean-Pierre Bertrand. Made in 1991 by master glassmaker Florent Chaboissier, these stained glass windows bring a modern touch to this medieval monument. Ranked as a historical monument in 1862, Saint-Andéol Church today embodies a mixture of Romanesque heritage, turbulent religious history and recent artistic creation.

The building is owned by the commune of Bourg-Saint-Andéol and remains a major architectural testimony of the region. Its cloister, residual Carolingian sculptures and contemporary stained glass windows make it both historic and living, anchored in the ardèche cultural landscape.
