Origin and history

The castle of Saint-Chamant, located on the town of the same name in the Cantal, dominates the valley of the Cantal Mountains. Its architectural history begins with a 14th century dungeon, of which today only a three-sided tower with a staircase remains. A round tower, partially destroyed, once marked the north corner. This strategic site was profoundly transformed in the 17th century by the Robert de Lignerac family, a future lineage of the Dukes of Caylus, who erected a vast body of house with richly decorated interiors: panelling, tapestries of Aubusson, retables and woodwork of the 17th century.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a small house body was added by reusing the materials of the missing round tower, while a forebody was built in 1905. The communes, including a 17th-century wing, complete this set of historic monuments since 1988, and extended in 2022 to include gardens, courtyards and orchards. The castle is surrounded by a terraced park, reflecting successive landscape developments.

The seigneury of Saint-Chamant was first owned by the eponymous family, before passing in 1473 to Robert de Balzac of Entraygues, Senechal of Agenes and adviser to Kings Louis XI and Charles VIII. The latter, after redeeming seigneurial rights, founded in 1484 a chapter of six richly endowed canons, and probably built the present dungeon. At his death in 1503 the castle ran to his descendants until his sale in 1589 to the Roberts de Lignerac, the family that kept him until his judicial seizure in 1777 for debts.

Acquired in 1783 by Pierre Couderc, king's adviser, the estate has since remained in his descendants. The Couderc family of Saint-Chamant, including François (1780-1863), receiver-general of the Cantal, preserved the whole until today. The castle thus illustrates almost six centuries of history, mixing medieval military architecture, aristocratic fascists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and modern adaptations.

Among the remarkable elements are a collection of tapestries of Aubusson and Flanders from the 17th century, a altarpiece in the chapel, as well as a large staircase and woodwork of the period. The protection of the monument, initially partial in 1988, was expanded in 2022 to cover the entire estate, highlighting its heritage importance.
