Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Châteauvillain is a religious building located in the commune of Châteauvillain, Haute-Marne, in the Grand-Est region. Its current construction dates from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, between 1770 and 1784, at the initiative of the Duke of Penthièvre, then lord of Châteauvillain. The latter, a member of the royal family, played a key role in the reconstruction of the building, whose façade is attributed to the architect Soufflot, famous for his emblematic achievements such as the Panthéon de Paris.

In 1874, the church was partially rebuilt by the entrepreneur Beauvallet, from Lanty, according to the plans of the departmental architect Arsène Descaves. This intervention helped preserve and modernize the building, while respecting its architectural heritage. The façade, classified as a historic monument since 1972, is the only element of the church to benefit from this protection, while the rest of the building is included in the additional inventory.

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption embodies a major religious and architectural heritage of the Haute-Marne. Its history reflects the stylistic evolutions and the challenges of preservation from the 18th to the 19th century, while at the same time testifying to the influence of aristocratic sponsors such as the Duke of Penthever. Today, it remains a place of worship and a symbol of local heritage, open to the visit and managed by the commune of Châteauvillain.
