Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle d'Hôpital-Camfrout, built in the 16th century, replaces an 11th century priory founded by the monks of Landevennec. Its irregular plan includes a nave with low side, a polygonal bedside, and a richly carved western facade, mixing plant motifs, animals and Renaissance elements. The keranton, a local stone, allows ornaments of great finesse, while anonymous coats adorn inside and outside.

The western facade, comparable to that of Notre-Dame de Rumengol, bears witness to the influence of Viscounts du Faou, financial contributors as early as 1537. The south porch (1611) and south arm of the transept (1736, Logonna stone) were later added. A fire destroyed the roof in 1825, followed by restorations, including the bell tower balustrade in 1873. Modern stained glass (1955-1967) completes this building classified as a Historic Monument since 1916.

The church, surrounded by a cemetery until 1884, illustrates Breton architectural evolution, from medieval origins to Baroque and neoclassical additions. Its bell tower and western façade, protected, embody an exceptional sculptural heritage, linked to local craftsmanship and noble sponsors. The baptismal fonts (1792) and the sacristy (1734) recall its central role in parish life.

The vicissitudes of history, such as the fire of 1825 or the aborted expansion projects (1866), underline its resilience. The bells, melted in the 19th century by Alphonse Viel, and the stained glass windows of Auguste Talbouret and the workshop Le Bihan, testify to its anchoring in Breton culture, between tradition and modernity.
