Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Saint-Tropez is a Baroque-style religious monument, built mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Located in the Var, it replaces an earlier church and becomes a symbol of the city. Its white limestone façade and bell tower with ochre tones contrast with the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. The building houses notable works such as a bust of Saint Tropez, patron of the sailors, used during the local procession of the bravada.

The construction works lasted until 1784, with an official consecration in 1820 by Bishop Bausset-Roquefort, Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence. The church has been listed as a historical monument since 1981. Its bell tower, immortalized in 1896 by Paul Signac in a painting preserved in Toulouse, strengthens its status as a cultural emblem. Inside, a bust of St Peter completes the remarkable heritage elements.

The building, owned by the municipality, illustrates Provencal religious architecture and its anchor in local life. Its history also reflects the artistic and social evolution of Saint-Tropez, between maritime tradition and tourist influence. The accuracy of its location (3 Rue Saint-Tropez) and its registration in the Merimée inventory confirm its heritage importance.
