Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Pierre de La Romieu is an architectural complex composed of a church, a cloister, two towers and the remains of a palace. Founded in the 14th century, it is located in the village of La Romieu, north of Gers, in Occitanie. This monument, classified as a historical monument since 1901 and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, marks an emblematic stage on the roads of Santiago de Compostela.

The origin of the collegiate church dates back to 1312, when Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, a native of La Romieu and close to Pope Clement V, acquired an existing priory to establish a collegiate church. This prince of the Church, a camerer of the Pontifical Court, plays a key role in its foundation, transforming the site into a religious and defensive place. The building, with its arches and niches, also served as a refuge for the population in case of danger.

The church is distinguished by its four-span nave, flanked by two towers: one square housing the bell tower, the other octagonal containing the sacristy, the old capitular room, an archive room and a gazebo. Inside, the sacristy is decorated with murals depicting the apostles, saints and bishops, while the vault has angels and angel musicians. These artistic elements reflect the spiritual and cultural importance of the place.

Ranked for its radiant Gothic architecture, the college also illustrates medieval defensive ingenuity. Its attic, with an uninterrupted arching, protected the building and its occupants. The stormwater was evacuated by a system of slugs and gargoyles, showing both practical and aesthetic design.

Today, the collegiate Saint-Pierre de La Romieu remains a symbol of the gascon heritage and a testimony to the religious and architectural history of the region, attracting pilgrims and visitors for its preserved medieval heritage.

Future

The Collégiale Saint-Pierre is one of 71 monuments and 7 portions of paths have been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998 under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It is on the way to Via Podiensis, or "Voy du Puy", from Puy-en-Velay to the Basque village of Ostabat, where it joins via Turonensis and via Lemovicensis gathered shortly before.
