Front wall on Rue Brémond-d'Ars with its ogival window (Box AR 297): classification by decree of 8 June 1949; All the ruins of the abbey except parts classified (cad. AR 297): inscription by order of 8 June 1949
Origin and history
The Abbey of Saint-Colomban, located in Quimperlé in Finistère, is a medieval vestige dating from the 13th century. Today, there is only a section of the wall, bearing witness to its original architecture. This wall retains a door in the middle of the hanger, while a bay in broken arch, devoid of its stone hinges, dominates the whole. These architectural elements, though fragmentary, illustrate the early Gothic style of the period.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 8 June 1949, the facade on the rue Brémond-d'Ars, with its ogival window, is subject to specific protection. All the ruins of the abbey, with the exception of the classified parts, are inscribed in the same title. These conservation measures underscore the heritage importance of the site, despite its state of advanced degradation.
The location of the abbey, at 18 B rue Brémond-d'Ars, is attested by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates, although the accuracy of this location is considered poor (note of 5/10). Owned by the Finistère department, the site does not reveal in available sources its current status regarding visits, rentals or possible tourist uses as guest rooms.
The photographs available, such as Sferay's under Creative Commons license, allow us to appreciate the current state of the ruins. These images, coupled with architectural descriptions, offer a limited but valuable overview of what was once a medieval abbey. The absence of sources detailing its history or occupants makes it difficult to reconstitute its past role in the region.
The 1949 classification and inscription mark an official recognition of the historical and artistic value of the remains. These legal protections aim to preserve the last structural elements of the abbey, while allowing questions about its history and evolution throughout the centuries. No additional information is available about the founders, the religious communities that occupied him, or the significant events that took place there.
