Origin and history

Église Saint-Étienne de Courances is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Étienne, located in the Essonne department, Île-de-France. Originally built in the 12th century, it has undergone several major transformations over the centuries. Its bell tower, dated from the 15th century, was enhanced in the 16th century, while the nave was rebuilt in the 17th century. As early as the 15th century, the building presented problems of stability, leading to the collapse of the north wall in the 18th century. The interior decoration, redone between 1846 and 1868, reflects the styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The church is home to a hundred-year-old man who lived there, testifying to his local historical importance. Despite its structural frailties, it has been preserved and has been listed as historical monuments since 29 December 1981 by ministerial decree. This status protects its architectural and artistic heritage, while emphasizing its role in Courances' religious and community history.

The location of the church at 4 Rue de l'Eglise à Courances (code Insee 91180), makes it a central element of the village. Owned by the commune, it remains an active place of worship while attracting visitors for its heritage. Its inclusion in the Mérimée bases and its referencing on religious and heritage platforms (such as GCatholic or the Observatory of Religious Heritage) enhance its cultural and tourist visibility.
