Origin and history
The Calvary of Saint-Jean-Trolimon is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of the same name in Finistère (Bretagne). Built in the 16th century, it represents a remarkable example of Breton religious architecture of that time. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 13 June 1894 underlines its heritage and artistic importance.
This type of calvary, typical of Great Britain, served both as a place of devotion and as a visual landmark for pilgrims and inhabitants. The Breton Calvaries of the 16th century were often erected at crossroads or near churches, playing a central role in spiritual and community life. Their iconography, rich in biblical scenes, reflected the religious beliefs and practices of the time.
Today, the Calvary of Saint-Jean-Trolimon remains a valuable testimony to the cultural and religious heritage of the region. Although its exact location is noted as "a priori satisfactory", it continues to attract the attention of historians and visitors for its authenticity and historical value. Owned by the commune, it is open to visit, thus perpetuating its role in collective memory.
