Origin and history

The Commanderie de Saint-Martin is a historical monument located in Vence, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Although its exact origin and construction period are not specified in the available sources, its status as a commander suggests a link with religious military orders, such as Templars or Hospitallers, often located in strategic areas to provide protection and assistance to pilgrims or travellers. The remains of this commandory, now partially preserved, were recorded as historical monuments by an order of 14 August 1927.

This type of monument generally played a central role in local life, serving as a place of worship, accommodation or administrative centre for religious orders. In Vence, as in other parts of Provence, these establishments helped to structure the territory and organize community life around religious, agricultural or charitable activities.
