Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Bromont-Lamothe was built between 1866 and 1868 by diocesan architect Aymon-Gilbert Mallay on the site of an old building. It includes elements characteristic of major Auvergnate churches, such as a nave with collaterals and a choir with a walk-in, while removing transepts and side stands. Mallay incorporates eclectic solutions, such as two lateral apsidioles on the bedside and columns with regular arches, evoking classical basilic churches.

Inside, a hierarchically painted decor covers walls, columns and vaults, blending fake appliances, geometric patterns and plant representations to highlight volumes. This decor is accompanied by furniture partly from the old church and the Chartreuse de Port-Sainte-Marie. The stained glass windows, made in 1890 by master glassmakers Mailhot, Gaudin and Thibaud, complete this coherent artistic ensemble.

The church, classified as a Historic Monument in 2009, illustrates 19th-century religious architecture in Auvergne, combining local tradition with eclectic innovations. Its interior polychromy and original furniture make it a rare testimony to the sacred art of this period. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), and it belongs to the municipality of Bromont-Lamothe, in Puy-de-Dôme.
