Origin and history
The Château d'Ecou, located in Tilques in the Hauts-de-France, illustrates an architecture that has been constantly evolving since the Middle Ages. Originally conceived as a medieval fortress in the 12th century, it underwent major transformations in the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting changes in usage and taste. These successive changes are a rare testimony to the adaptation of castles throughout the era, moving from a defensive role to a residential and aesthetic function.
In the 19th century, the castle was redesigned in a neo-medieval style, a romantic trend that idealized the architectural forms of the Middle Ages. This stylistic choice, popular at the time, aims to recreate a picturesque medieval atmosphere, often inspired by artistic and literary movements. However, in the second half of the 20th century, architect Joseph Philippe intervened to remove certain additions deemed excessive, restoring a more sober consistency to the monument.
The Château d'Ecou has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2014, protecting not only the main building, but also its outbuildings such as the farm, moat, bridge, terrace, park and gardens. This protection also includes the soil of the surrounding parcels, highlighting the heritage importance of the whole. The site thus embodies nearly nine centuries of history, where each period has left a visible imprint, while adapting to the needs and tastes of its successive occupants.
