Origin and history

Denonville Castle, located in the department of Eure-et-Loir, is an 18th-century building in a stripped neoclassical style. Built in bricks, it retains medieval elements, including four round towers integrated with the corners of the central body, erected in 1770 by architect Denis-Claude Liegéon. The court of honour, lined with dry ditches in half circle and closed by a gate, is framed by wings sheltering stables, kitchens and outbuildings.

The seigneury of Denonville was attested in the Middle Ages, but the present castle replaced an earlier structure. The facades, roofs, and some interior elements (such as the wrought iron staircase) have been protected since 1976 and 2007. The south wing, the well, and the ditches are listed as historical monuments. The set reflects an architecture adapted to the residential and agricultural needs of the time.

The castle illustrates the transition between medieval fortifications and the aristocratic residences of the Enlightenment. His plan, combining neoclassical symmetry and defensive vestiges, bears witness to a desire for modernity while preserving an ancient heritage. The dependencies organised around the court of honour underline its role as an economic and social centre for the field.
