Origin and history
The Porte des Ormeaux is a medieval defensive gate of Cordes-sur-Ciel, built during the foundation of the bastide between 1222 and 1229 by the Count of Toulouse Raymond VII. It was part of the inner enclosure, designed to protect the city, and illustrates the military architecture of the period. Its low limestone appearance and its high section in shale and sandstone, added in the 14th century, testify to a rehabilitation after partial destruction.
This door was equipped with an advanced defensive system, including two harrows and a wooden door, framed by two asymmetric towers. The right tower, on two floors, and the left tower, abrased, reflect military adaptations to the evolution of weapons, such as the use of guns. Despite the construction of an outer enclosure, the inner enclosure, of which this door is part, was preserved, which is rare.
The Porte des Ormeaux has been a historic monument since 7 September 1910 and belongs to the Société des Amis du Vieux Cordes. Since 2008, it has housed the Charles Portal Museum, dedicated to the history of the city, installed in the tower and an adjoining house. This museum was created to compensate for the small size of previous premises and to enhance local heritage.
The monument is characteristic of the bastides of southwestern France, founded in a context of conflicts, such as the Albigois Crusade. Cordes-sur-Ciel, cited in the Treaty of Meaux-Paris (1229) as a major fortress of the Albigeois, is a notable example. The gate thus symbolizes both the city's defensive power and its strategic role in the region.
The materials used, limestone for the low and grey shale parts for the elevations, as well as the traces of bricks inside the enclosure, reveal various construction techniques and a willingness to adapt to local resources. The grooves of the herses and the sandstone frames of the bays are remarkable architectural details, typical of medieval times.
