Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Épiais-lès-Lovers is a classified historical monument, dated the seventeenth century. It is distinguished by its artistic and religious value, typical of the sculpted works of that time in the region. Its location in the local cemetery highlights its central role in funeral practices and community memory.

This cross was carved by Denis Danvin, an artist whose name remains associated with this local heritage. It was commissioned under the ministry of Antoine Vautin, then parish priest, and René Tardu, the first churchmaster, thus reflecting the involvement of religious and secular authorities in its realization. Classified by ministerial decree in 1969, it now belongs to the commune.

The cemetery crosses, like that of Epias-lès-Lovers, traditionally marked sacred spaces and served as a landmark for the faithful. Their presence attests to the importance of religion in the social and spatial organization of French villages, particularly in Île-de-France, where the Church's influence was strong until the Revolution. These monuments were often gathering points for ceremonies and processions.
