Base de croix : inscription by decree of 16 June 1926

Origin and history

The cross located in the cemetery of Gouzangrez is an emblematic monument of this commune of Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France. Dated from the 13th century, it bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of this region. Although little details are available on its construction or sponsor, its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1926 underscores its heritage importance.

Only the base of the cross enjoys official protection, perhaps reflecting the best preserved remains of the original building. In the 13th century, Val-d'Oise, like much of Ile-de-France, was marked by a rural society organized around parishes and seigneuries. The cemetery crosses then played a central role, both religious and social: they served as a reference point for processions, a symbol of protection for the deceased, and a gathering place for the community.

Their presence in medieval cemeteries illustrates the importance of the Christian faith in daily life, as well as the concern to mark the sacred space on a lasting basis. These monuments, often modest, were nevertheless structural elements of landscape and collective memory.
