Origin and history
The cemetery of Colombe-lès-Vesoul, located in the department of Haute-Saône in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is best known for its cross dated the 15th century. This architectural element, typical of medieval religious buildings, was inscribed as historical monuments on 24 January 1927. It shows the importance of Christian symbols in the funeral spaces of the time, often placed at the heart of villages to mark their spiritual and community identity.
The 15th century cross is the main historical vestige of the cemetery. Its inscription in 1927 underlines its heritage value, reflecting both medieval craftsmanship and a memorial dimension for the municipality. The cemetery also houses the burial of Henri Teitgen (1908-1997), Vice-President of the National Assembly, whose presence strengthens the link between this place and recent French political history.
Colombe-les-Vesoul, like many villages in Franche-Comté, has developed around its church and cemetery, central areas of social and religious life since the Middle Ages. The cemetery crosses, often erected at crossroads or near places of worship, served as visual and spiritual landmarks for the inhabitants. Their conservation until today illustrates the persistence of these markers in the French rural landscape.
