Fifteenth century cross: by order of 9 April 1924

Origin and history

Valravillon Cemetery, located in the department of Yonne in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is mainly known for its cross dating from the 15th century. This funerary monument, typical of small medieval communes, reflects the religious and community importance of cemeteries at that time, often placed in the heart of villages or close to churches. In the 15th century, Burgundy was a region marked by strong religious influence and a social organization centred around parishes.

Cemeteries, like Valravillon, served not only as burial grounds, but also as a gathering space for local ceremonies and festivals. The 15th century cross, which was listed as a historic monument in 1924, bears witness to this period when religious art and funeral architecture played a central role in the daily lives of the inhabitants.
