Origin and history

The Jardin de la Chartreuse is associated with a castle built around 1840 by architect Rogues. The latter has a symmetrical architecture, with a central body framed by two pavilions connected by a stone link. A terrace, accessible by side or central stairs, precedes the façade, while a large basin adorns the front of the house. The park, structured according to 19th-century landscape cannons, includes flowered massifs, a historic charmille, and groves spread over wooded lawns.

The garden is lined with a wrought iron gate and fenced walls, elements protected since 1992. Manufactures — adorned buildings inspired by the ruins or picturesque elements — were erected there from stones from Bonnivet Castle, reflecting the taste of the era for romantic decorations and historical references. The main driveway, lined with massifs, leads to the charmille, planted from the origin of the property, while the commons and the house form a harmonious whole.

The location of the site, originally referenced in Jaunay-Clan (now Jaunay-Marigny), is documented in the Merimée database under the Insee 86115 code in the Vienna department. Although the exact address has evolved (15 avenue de Paris or 3 Impasse de Venise), the garden remains a preserved testimony of 19th-century garden art in Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the New Aquitaine region.
