Origin and history

The building at 3 rue du Plantier in Périgueux (Dordogne) is a 16th century civil building, representative of Renaissance architecture. Its most remarkable element is a basket handle porch, molded and surmounted by a cartridge decorated with two extended angels. This porch gives access to a round tower housing a stone-screwed staircase, typical of the buildings of this time. The original studded woodwork, still present, reinforces the historic authenticity of the place.

The monument was partially protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments on 24 June 1948, specifically concerning the gate in the courtyard (cadastral reference D 155). Today, the building belongs to a private company, and its current use (visit, rental, or other) is not specified in available sources. The location, although documented (address and GPS coordinates), is considered to be of satisfactory a priori accuracy (note 6/10).

Architecturally, this porch illustrates the influence of Italian motifs in the French Renaissance, with sculpted details such as angels and basket handles, characteristic of the monumental entrances of this period. The round tower and its spiral staircase remind the medieval technical solutions, often reinterpreted in the Renaissance for bourgeois or aristocratic urban dwellings.
