Window on the posterior façade: inscription by decree of 12 October 1946
Origin and history
The building 4 rue de la République in Beaucaire retains a double niche originally conceived as a twin window of the 14th century. This architectural vestige, integrated with a facade having lost its medieval character, is distinguished by its two broken arches falling on a central column. The latter, with a finely worked capital, rests on a base itself laid on a support decorated with geometric motifs (small squares in relief). A later partition divided the opening, turning it into a niche.
The protection of this element dates back to a decree of 12 October 1946, which inscribed the window (now niche) under the title of Historical Monuments. The monument thus illustrates the persistence of Gothic details in an otherwise redesigned building, typical of Occitan urban centres. The location indicated (3 or 4 rue de la République) suggests poor geographical accuracy, with an approximate address confirmed by GPS coordinates.
No information on the original use of the building (housing, commerce, etc.) or its sponsor. The niche transformation and the disappearance of other medieval elements reflect later changes, common in the changing cities. Today the monument remains unopened to the visit, without documented tourist or cultural use.
