Origin and history
The building at 20 Ninau Street in Toulouse is a composite architectural complex, marked by three distinct construction periods. The main body, the oldest, is organized around an inner courtyard, while a 17th century rectangular wing and an extension of the 19th century close the space. The latter, renovated in the 19th century, includes terracotta decorations signed by the sculptor Virebent, including a fireplace with atlantes, as well as a Louis XV fireplace decorated with gypseries. The 17th century stairway partially preserves its original deciphered wall, and a large vaulted room on dogives cross marks the late medieval architecture.
The building was partially protected by an order of 25 June 1993, covering facades, roofs, vaulted entrance porch, paved courtyard, as well as several remarkable interior rooms. These include vaulted rooms adjacent to the porch, a room with fireplace and wooden ceiling, and a large vaulted bass room. These elements illustrate the stylistic evolution of the building, between the 17th century heritage and subsequent transformations. The official address (20 Ninau Street) contrasts with an approximate GPS location (1 Lafayette Street), reflecting inaccuracies in geographic databases.
The sculptor Virebent, known for his terracotta work, marked the 19th century wing with decorations characteristic of his style. His intervention, particularly on the chimney with atlantes, highlights the influence of local artisans in the renovation of Toulouse monuments. The building, although not systematically open to the public, embodies Toulouse's civil heritage, combining residential functions and potential cultural vocations (room rental, guest rooms).
