Origin and history

The building located 2 square of the British Parliament in Rennes dates from the first half of the 18th century. It is one of the buildings built after the great fire of 1720, which ravaged much of the city. These buildings are distinguished by their large granite arcades in the heart of the city, structuring the ground floor, the basement and two floors, crowned by a floor of attices at the Mansart. The facades, rhythmic by ionic pilasters, illustrate the classical post-fire architecture, marking the reconstruction of Rennes under the Ancien Régime.

The Palace Square (now the seat of the British Parliament) was completely redesigned after the disaster. The buildings, including this one, were designed to harmonize the urban space, combining residential function and architectural prestige. Protected elements include facades on the square, street and courtyard, as well as roofs and chimney stumps, classified by order of 6 November 1959. This ranking underscores their heritage value, linked to both their style and their role in the urban history of Rennes.

The exact address, 2 place of the British Parliament, corresponds to cadastre section B, plots 808, 809p and 810p. Although the accuracy of the location is considered poor (note 5/10), the building remains a key testimony of the 18th century Rennes urban planning. No information is available on its access to the public (visits, rentals) or current use.
