The well located in the courtyard: classification by order of 16 September 1946

Origin and history

The building in Nancy, built in the 1st quarter of the 17th century, is an architectural testimony of this period. Although little detailed information is available on its construction or occupants, its classification as Historic Monument in 1946 highlights its heritage importance, particularly for its well located in the courtyard, protected by ministerial decree. In the 17th century, Nancy, then capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, experienced a marked urban and cultural boom.

The buildings of this time often reflect the influence of late Renaissance and emerging Baroque styles, incorporating decorative or functional elements such as wells, essential to everyday life. These buildings are part of a context where the city is modernized, under the impulse of the Dukes of Lorraine, with a mixture of civil architecture and public beautification.
