Origin and history

This building in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, built in the early 20th century, is distinguished by its architecture designed to house 48 artists' workshops and service rooms. It illustrates the rise of spaces dedicated to artistic creation in the capital at the turn of the century, combining housing and work in the same place. The facades, roofs and courtyard, protected since 2014, testify to this initial vocation.

The building welcomed major figures in French culture, including Anaïs Nin, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre and Claude Lanzmann. These personalities, among other authors, painters and musicians, lived and worked there, making this place an iconic intellectual and creative home. Its history thus reflects the artistic and literary effervescence of Paris in the 20th century.

Designed by architect Gauthier and engineer François Hennebique, the building combines functionality and aesthetics, characteristic of the buildings of the time. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 2014 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in French cultural history. The location, between Victor-Schoelcher and Victor-Consider, makes it a geographical and symbolic landmark of artistic Paris.
