Origin and history

The ossuary of the Saint is a funeral building built in the 16th century, located in the municipality of the Saint, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. It is joined to the church of Saint-Samuel, in its southwest extremity, under the bell tower. This monument, built of local granite, is distinguished by its slate roof which extends the church roof, as well as by four lobes windows occupying a large southern bay. Its architecture reflects the funeral and religious practices of the time, where the ossuary was used to store the exhumed bones of parish cemeteries.

The ossuary of the Saint was built simultaneously at the church, whose window bears the date of 1575. This type of monument was common in Brittany, where churches and their outbuildings played a central role in community and spiritual life. Ossuaries recall the fragility of life and the place of death in medieval and reborn Christian culture, while meeting practical needs related to the management of burials.

The monument was listed as historic monuments by order of 13 January 1937, recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underscores its architectural and historical importance, as well as its harmonious integration into the parish. The ossuary, owned by the commune, bears witness to local expertise in stone carving and construction, while illustrating the funeral beliefs and practices of 16th century Brittany.
