Origin and history
The house of Perron, located 13 rue des Changes in Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), is a 13th and 14th century building, as confirmed by the dendrochronological dating of its frame around 1270-1272. This four-level trapezoidal building once served as a justice room and city hall, reflecting its civic importance in the medieval city. Its two-sided entrance porch, adorned with carved heads, and its grooved berries with animal and floral decorations illustrate a refined craftsmanship for the time.
Ranked a historic monument in 1912 for its posterior façade and its structure, the house was the subject of extensive protections in 2006 and 2009, covering its major architectural elements (porch, roof, dropural walls with their stone crows). The west gable, preserved in its original state, has three bays per level, while the gable is decorated with a painted fresco depicting two riders in joute dress, underlined by a frieze of quadrilobes and a coat of arms. These decorative elements, combined with traces of furniture such as nails and blocks, reveal an administrative and symbolic vocation.
In the 17th century, a portal was pierced to link the building directly to the municipal arsenal, marking an adaptation of its use over the centuries. Today, the house of Perron — also called Parloir aux Bourgeois or Les Trois Rois — remains a remarkable example of medieval civil architecture in the Centre-Val de Loire, mixing public functions and artistic heritage. Its successive classification and shared conservation between private and common owners demonstrate its enduring heritage value.
