Origin and history
The municipal museum of Aragon conserves collections dedicated to mining and metallurgical mining in the Black Mountain. The ancient site of the Martys, searched since the 1970s, was one of the largest steel centers of ancient times. These vestiges bear witness to the importance of iron production in the region from that time onwards, with techniques and a craft organisation still partially unknown.
The museum's medieval collections illuminate daily life in Cabaret Castrum, located in the nearby municipality of Lastours. This site, regularly searched, reveals aspects of the social, military and economic organization of a fortified village typical of the Middle Ages in Languedoc. The objects exhibited illustrate the domestic, artisanal and defensive activities of the inhabitants.
Contemporary mining is represented by tools, machines and oral testimonies collected from former workers. These elements document the evolution of mining and processing techniques, particularly in the Salsigne mine, as well as the living conditions of miners until the end of the 20th century. The museum highlights the link between this industrial heritage and the territory of the Black Mountain.
