Origin and history

The collections of the municipal museum of Acy originated in the 19th century, particularly in the framework of the local drawing school. From 1847, the Historical, Archaeological and Scientific Society of the region enriched these collections, which also benefited from state deposits as well as prestigious donations, such as those of the Marmottan and Rothschild families. These first acquisitions cover a variety of fields, ranging from archaeology to fine arts and historical documents.

During the First World War, collections were dispersed, but were partially rebuilt in 1933 thanks to major donations, such as the Lengelé donation, centered on Gallo-Roman archaeological pieces, and the Labarre donation. A further dispersal occurred between 1940 and 1944 during World War II. The collections were finally reconstituted in 1950, incorporating archaeological objects, historical documents and pictorial works, the latter being strengthened by the Regional Museum Acquisition Fund (FRAM).

The museum is associated with the former Saint-Léger Abbey, whose abbey church features architectural elements dating from the 11th to the 17th century, such as a Romanesque crypt, a Gothic choir and a classic nave. The current collections cover a wide range of themes, from prehistory to contemporary art, including local history, numismatics and decorative arts. The museum highlights the archaeology of the Aisne Valley and the paintings of the schools of the North, Italian and French.
