Origin and history
La Porte du Bois de Joigny is a 13th-century military building in the city of Joigny, located in the Yonne department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was an integral part of the fortified enclosure of the medieval city, designed to protect its inhabitants from frequent invasions and conflicts at that time. Today, it is the only one of the four original doors still standing, testifying to the resistance of the defensive structures of the time.
The tower, built entirely in flint, served as a forage attic for the army, illustrating its adaptation to logistical needs over the centuries. It has a small door equipped with a pulley, an architectural element characteristic of medieval defence systems. Despite the many wars that marked its history, the gate survived and was classified as historic monuments by order of 19 June 1942, thereby recognizing its heritage value.
The Porte du Bois is now owned by the commune of Joigny. Its state of conservation and classification make it a valuable testimony to the 13th century military architecture in Burgundy. Although its initial use is now obsolete, it remains a symbol of local history and a point of interest for medieval heritage enthusiasts.
