Origin and history

This building, located in Vuillafans in the Doubs, dates from the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It is a typical house of this period, whose architecture reflects the styles of the nascent Renaissance, although some later changes altered its original appearance. The most remarkable element is its Gothic staircase, which was classified as Historic Monument by order of 13 October 1937, bearing witness to the heritage value of this building.

The bays on the ground floor were modified at an indefinite time, and the second floor was built after 1937, probably to meet housing or modern needs. These transformations illustrate the adaptation of old buildings to changes in lifestyles, while maintaining traces of their medieval and reborn past. The building is located in 10 Place Saint-Vernier, an address that confirms its anchoring in the historic heart of Vuillafans.

Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region to which Vuillafans belong, was in the sixteenth century a land of transition between medieval influences and Renaissance innovations. The houses of that time often served as houses for local artisans, merchants or notables, playing a central role in community life. Their preservation, like that of this building, allows to understand the urban and architectural evolution of the region.
