Origin and history

The building located 8 Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux is an iconic 18th century building, integrated into a major architectural complex of the city. Its facades and roofs on the Place de la Bourse were classified as Monument Historique since 1917, while other parts benefited from subsequent protections, such as the inscription of 1928 for rue Ferdinand-Philippart (formerly rue de la Bourse). This building is part of a wider perimeter including the Hotel de la Bourse and other surrounding buildings, which are themselves protected by decrees of 2019 and 2020.

The Place de la Bourse, the economic heart of Bordeaux in the 18th century, concentrated private hotels and buildings linked to maritime commerce, reflecting the prosperity of the city at that time. The building in question, with its protected elements (facades, roofs, courtyard for the Hotel de la Douane nearby), illustrates the classic Bordeaux architecture, marked by royal influences and a desire for urban beautification. The successive protections underline its heritage importance, notably after the initial classification of 1917, one of the first for a Bordeaux building.

The protection orders have expanded over time: in 2019, unprotected parts of the surrounding buildings were registered, and in 2020, a classification covered the entire square, including floor, courtyard, and fountain of the Hotel de la Douane. These measures are aimed at preserving the integrity of a major historic site, a witness to the Bordeaux Golden Age under the Ancien Régime. No information is available on its current use (visit, rental) or its historic owners.
