Origin and history
The building located 11 Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux is a representative building of the eighteenth century, a period of prosperity for the city, marked by ambitious urban planning and enrichment linked to maritime commerce. This building is part of the homogeneous architectural ensemble of Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse), symbol of the prestige of Bordeaux under the Ancien Régime. Its facades and roofs, classified in 1918, illustrate the classic French style, with local influences such as the typical blonde stone of the region.
The protection of the building has expanded over time: after a first classification in 1918 for the facade on the square, an inscription in 1928 concerned the facade on the street and the roof. More recently, in 2019 and 2020, by-laws extended protection to uncovered parties, as well as to all hotels surrounding the square, including the Hotel de la Douane and the Hotel de la Bourse. These measures reflect the desire to preserve the integrity of a major Bordeaux heritage site, now owned by the department.
The exact address, 11 Place de la Bourse; 1 rue Saint-Rémy, confirms its anchor in the historic heart of Bordeaux, close to the Garonne. The accuracy of its location (noted 5/10 in the Merimée base) suggests approximate coordinates, although its identification remains clear. The building, although not systematically open to the visit, participates in the tourist attraction of the square, classified to the UNESCO World Heritage since 2007 in the perimeter of Bordeaux, Port of the Moon.
