Origin and history

The building located at 17 Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux is an iconic 18th century building, integrated into a major architectural complex of the city. This monument, whose facade and roofs have been classified since 1916, illustrates the prestige of Bordeaux at that time, marked by an economic boom linked to maritime and colonial trade. The Place de la Bourse, designed by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, symbolizes this prosperity with its private hotels and administrative buildings, reflecting the influence of the Enlightenment on urban planning.

The successive protections of the building demonstrate its heritage value. A first decree in 1916 classifies its facade and roofs, followed in 2019 by the registration of unprotected parts of the surrounding buildings. Finally, in 2020, an expanded classification includes the Hotel de la Douane, the Hotel de la Bourse and hotels numbered 2 to 18 bis, consolidating the preservation of this coherent architectural ensemble. These measures underline the historic and aesthetic importance of the site, now at the heart of Bordeaux heritage.

The location of the building, specified by GPS coordinates and official address, places this monument in an exceptional urban setting. The Place de la Bourse, with its fountain and symmetrical buildings, remains an emblematic place of Bordeaux, attracting visitors and researchers. Although the practical information on the visits is not detailed in the sources, its status as a Historical Monument and its central location make it a major point of interest for the discovery of the architectural heritage of New Aquitaine.
