Origin and history
The monument to the dead of Banos, located near the church against the presbytery wall, was erected in the early twentieth century to honour the victims of the First World War. This monument, of naive style, symbolizes a funeral chapel and is distinguished by its representation of a polychrome soldier at rest, framed by two columns surmounted by a triangular pediment. He embodied the local tribute to soldiers who fell between 1914 and 1918, while integrating an unusual artistic dimension for this type of memorial building.
The work was performed in 1921 under the direction of Canon Descorps, then parish priest of Banos and sculptor of the monument. The sculptures, marked by a naive style, reflect a personal and local artistic approach, far from the academic canons of monuments to the dead of the time. The monument, backed by the presbytery, is part of the urban landscape of Banos, strengthening its community and memorial anchor.
Ranked as a historic monument, the monument to the dead of Banos was inscribed entirely by order of 21 October 2014. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its artistic originality and for its role in the collective memory of the commune. Owned by the municipality, it remains a strong symbol of local history and the involvement of the Landese during the Great War.
