Origin and history

The windmill of L'Hermitage, located in Tosny (at the Three Lakes in Normandy), was built at the hinge of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Built in limestone rubble on an impressive base of cut stone, it is distinguished by its vertical link and its protruding headband. This type of construction reflects the local architectural techniques of the time, adapted to the agricultural needs and resources available in the region.

In the 19th century, the mill was reused as a telegraph tower, illustrating the evolution of the uses of historic buildings according to technological needs. Falling into ruins later, it was protected under the Historical Monuments as part of a theme dedicated to windmills. This heritage recognition is intended to preserve a witness to milling activities and artisanal know-how.

In 1983, part of the structure collapsed, requiring urgent action. A volunteer-led restoration was undertaken in 1984, although disagreements with the Architecte des Bâtiments de France led, in 1989, to the controversial addition of a high-rise crow concrete hoard. This work reflects the contemporary challenges of heritage conservation, between respect for traditional methods and modern adaptations.

The mill is now included in the inventory of Historical Monuments since a decree of 30 May 1978, specifically covering its ruins (Cadastre E 359). Its present state, although partially restored, recalls both its past usefulness and the challenges of its preservation for future generations. Localisation, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), makes it possible to envisage projects of tourist or educational valorisation.
