Origin and history
The church of La Clastre, originally dedicated to Saint-Médard, was attached to a community of regular canons following the rule of Saint-Augustin. Its first written mention dates back to 1165, although its construction dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The building retains prominent Romanesque elements, such as pilasters, landfill arches and remains of ancient vaults in its second span.
From 1304 until the French Revolution, the monastery of La Clastre became a general command of the Antonins, a hospital and religious order. After 1789, the church was converted to parish worship. In the mid-19th century (1858-1862), the nave was enlarged by a span, while the span of the choir, formerly the base of the bell tower, retained more than a section of the west wall. A 15th-century door, decorated with an arch in a basket handle, gives access to the sacristy.
Classified as a historical monument since 1988, the church now belongs to the municipality of Piégros-la-Clastre. Its architecture thus blends medieval heritage – with preserved Romanesque structures – and later modifications, reflecting its evolution throughout the centuries. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), based on available data.
